Marisha Kazi is a junior Cognitive Science major who conducts research in Dr. Fey Parrill’s Language and Cognition lab. Her research examines gesture in cognitive embodiment of an abstract spatial chemistry concept—stereoisomers, as part of a collaboration with researchers at the University of Chicago (Raedy Ping, PI). She examines the effect of instruction requiring adults to gesture, manipulate, or imagine action on stereoisomers. Findings suggest that all instruction was beneficial for learning, but the gesture condition resulted in a significant advantage in learning for females! Marisha hopes to implement gesture into how tutors and supplemental instructors teach stereoisomers.
